The replacement of an old back boiler with a new back boiler is permitted only in situations whereby the replacement of the old back boiler with a modern boiler system would prove difficult.
You may ask how you determine whether you should replace your back boiler with a more modern boiler or not. The building regulations introduced a point system that requires you to have at least 100 points for you to qualify to replace your back boiler with a similar or more modern back boiler system. The awarding of points is dependant in the dimensions of your house and the type of living space (i.e. flat, apartment, semi-detached house e.t.c.), whether the boiler will require moving cast iron drainage pipes and the length of the flue for the new boiler amongst other factors. Each factor carries a certain weight in points. Points are awarded to your home according to the factors that have to be taken into consideration and if the total is greater than 100 points, you will be allowed to replace your back boiler with a similar back boiler system.
If your back boiler is still working efficiently and this has been confirmed by a technician, the new building regulations do not require you to have your back boiler replaced. The law allows you to keep your back boiler and buy spare parts to maintain it. There are some manufacturers who are still producing the spare parts for back boilers.
